Grade 3. “Food”.

TOPIC: FOOD. Revision.

Practical aim:       

– to practice  dialogical skills using the studied vocabulary;

-to train listening skills;

-to revise  previously taught vocabulary.

Development aim:

– developing study skills;

– to develop pupils’ linguistic outlook and communicative


Educative aim:     

 - to contribute to all-round development of personality.

Equipment: pictures of different kinds of food; a picture with a tree; cards,a computer,multimedia ; texts for jigsaw reading;  some sheets of paper with tasks for pupils; stickers in the form of apples ( green, red & yellow); a cap, some money, fruits  and a basket for role-playing.


I.Greeting and Aim.

Teacher: Good morning, pupils!

Children:  Good morning, good morning, good morning to you!

Good morning, good morning, we’re glad to see you!

Teacher: Today we’re going to revise the words we’ve studied on the topic “Food” and we’ll speak about healthy & junk food. We’ll sing songs, read verses, listen to the dialogues and so on. During the lesson you’ll get stickers in the form of apples for your answers. The great answer –a red apple, good answer- a yellow apple, so-so answer-a green apple. Try to do your best

II. Warming up.

Phonetic drill.

a)Teacher: But first of all let’s revise the ABC (song)

b) Teacher: Good! Can you name me these sounds?

(There are pictures on the board – [ æ ] [ a:] [ Λ ]  [ 3 ] [ d3 ] [ z ] [ t∫] [ j ] [ θ ][ ð ] )

c) Teacher: Read and repeat, please, after me:

If you,Sandy,

Have two candies,

Give one candy

d) Teacher: Look at the blackboard, please! Here is a poem with some words missing. There are the pictures of food instead of these words. Let’s try to read the poem together!

Children: (read the poem, adding the missing words. There are pictures on the board instead of the underlined words here.)

III. Vocabulary drill.

a)“The ABC of Food”.

Teacher: Thank you for good job, kids! And now we’ll do some brainstorming activity. Let’s join our class into 3 groups. Every group should tell me the name…

So, we’ve got 3 teams: …

Each group gets a task: to think of as many words of food as possible, starting with the given letters.

The winners are the pupils of the group who found more words.

b) Teacher: Good for you! Let’s revise the words (work with multimedia-flashcards) .

IV.Jigsaw Reading.

Pupils are divided into 2 groups.

Every group gets some different part of information. (They study the information for some time. Then the pupils are organized into other – “expert groups”, so that in each new group there are some pupils from each “home group”. Within the “expert groups” pupils exchange the information they’ve studied in “home groups”.

Then they turn back to their “home groups”, where together they have to know all information.

The winner is the group that answers more sentences and has the most correct picture. )

The tasks are to read, to match & to answer the questions.

V.Drilling dialogical units.

Work with multimedia.

 Teacher: Well, some food is healthy-that is good for your health & some food is not. The Americans call food that is not healthy < junk food>-сміттєва їжа. What food is healthy? /What food isn’t healthy? (Work with multimedia,” Healthy-junk food”).

Teacher: Let’s make a test.

You see, I like ice-cream a lot. What about you? What’s your favourite kind of food? I want you to ask each other.

Chain work. Pupils in chain ask each other about their favourite kinds of food.

P1: What do you like to eat?

P2:I  like to eat pizza! What do you like to eat?

P3: I  like to eat meat! What do you like to eat?

P4: I  like to eat ice-cream! What do you like to eat?

Summing up –healthy———< junk food>-

VI. Physical Exercises.

Work with multimedia.(”The Happy Song”).

VII. Listening Comprehension.

a) Pre-listening activity.

  Teacher: We are going to listen to a conversation. Look at the picture.

What can you see? What do you think this man wants to do?

Listen to the tape to see whether you are right, while listening try to fill in the gaps…

b) While-listening activity.

A: -What do you need, James?

J:  -I need some tomatoes…

A: -About a kilo.

J:  -Yes. And an onion…this big one.

A: -Any mushrooms?

J:  -Yes, of course and some cheese.

A: -Do you need any meet?

J:  -No, you don’t need any meat. It’s a vegetarian pizza.

A: -Hmm…It looks delicious.

Pupils fill in the gaps .

c) Post-Listening Activity.

Pupils answer the questions:

What’s the man’s name?

What is he going to cook?                                                                                         What does he need?

How many tomatoes does he need?

Does he need any meet

Pupils read the dialogues in roles to check the information written. The teacher corrects mistakes if there are any.

VIII. Speech Practice . Grammar practice.

a) Teacher explains the meaning of the most widely used phrases in the shop. Pupils read and and give Ukrainian equivalents of the phrases.

.b)Teacher gives each pupil a picture – with or without prices.

P1- Can I have … (a jar of honey), please?

A pupil, who’s got a picture of  honey stands up, gives the picture to the teacher and replies:

P2- Yes, here you are! – It is … dollars.

IX. Role-Playing.

Teacher explains a communicative situation.  One pupil is a shop-assistant, another is a buyer. While role-playing a shop-assistant puts on a cap and stands at the desk where there are packs of tea, bottles, cartons of juice, some kinds of fruit and vegetables. A buyer has got a bag.

  • Hello!
  • Hello! Can I help you?
  • Yes, please. Can I have some oranges, 1 banana & a pack of juice, please?
  • Yes, here you are. (gives the products to the buyer)… It costs 10 dollars.
  • (The buyer gives some money) Here! (puts the products into the basket) Thank you, goodbye!
  • Goodbye! Come again!

X. Summarizing.

Teacher: Thank you for your active work, children! Now I see you know a lot of words on the topic “Food” and all of you can make a conversation.You’ve got stickers & I want to ask you to make this tree beautiful. Stick your apples, please, on the tree & we’ll see the results of our work…

XI. Evaluation.

The best-working pupils get the best marks today and some little prizes(fruits). These are the pupils………., ……….., …………… Some of you worked well too, but you should be more active! ………. And some have to learn the words harder and then you’ll have no problems in making dialogues.


Teacher: The hometask is to revise all the words on this topic once again.
